Dennis Focke studied since 2003 biochemical engineering at the TU Dortmund. He graduated in August 2009 with his diploma thesis "Investigating the crystallization behavior of amino acids from idealized fermentation broths". Since September 2009 his research focus is on the scale up of crystallization processes.
The typical scale up of crystallization processes from the laboratory scale to the production scale is at the moment done step by step. On every step the equipment size is enlarged a little. Especially when crystallizing organic substances many experiments are required for secure scale up. But at the beginning of process development the amount of substance available for experiments is very low. So the whole scale procedure is very time and money consuming. The aim of the research is to save time and money by coupling experiments with computer models.
