For biotechnological products, a great amount of costs results from purification steps during downstream processing. In the present work, the main objective is to develop a platform that autonomously synthesizes and executes a downstream process based on heuristics, screening tests and statistical experiments. Thereby, the focus lies on steroid purification from a fermentation broth. For this purpose, a robotic platform (Zinsser Analytic) is utilized which executes several unit operations in a miniaturized dimension and in an automated manner. Thus, material consumption, manual effort and variances of experimental results are minimized. Key performance indicators are applied to identify an economically optimized process with regard to costs, yield and purity. As a result, suitable purification steps as well as optimal process conditions can be determined with the aid of the robotic platform.
